Free Ride

I remember a romp
to the village store.

The shelves were tall
and packed with candy.

My brother thought that
stuff was free,

and filled his pockets
shamelessly.

I knew we had
no money.

The aproned ogre
called the cops

who asked our names
and where we lived.

Mum stood in curlers
holding a mop

when the cruiser pulled up
by the kitchen door.

I must have been five,
and my brother just four

when we first rode with cops
and played robbers.
